Garden City Hair Stylist’s Singing Voice Generating YouTube Buzz
A Madison Taylor Salon employee’s singing voice is creating quite the buzz on YouTube.
In early July, Lynbrook resident Alex Calvo posted a song on YouTube he recorded of Geri Dejohn, a 1983 Seaford High School graduate who now resides in East Meadow. Since posting the video of the song called “When You Walk Out of My Life,” it has been averaging around 1,000 views per week.
“This is an incredible amount of hits because Geri Dejohn is an unknown; therefore, people do not search for her or Google her,” stated Calvo, who wrote and recorded the song from his Lynbrook recording studio. “The only way that the song can be getting these hits is by people recommending it to other people via email or social networking.”
Calvo stated the song picked up such buzz not only in the U.S. but also across the globe with an Internet radio station in Europe picking it up. The song has been put up for sale on iTunes, Amazon and many other Internet radio stations, Calvo said.
Dejohn stated she has been amazed by the attention her singing has generated from the YouTube video. She has been singing with community theatre groups for around a decade after being inspired by her children’s involvement in musical drama.
“If [the YouTube video] leads to anything than great but I just take it one day at a time,” stated Dejohn.
While thousands around the world have now heard Dejohn’s voice, the Seaford native has not been among the ones watching the YouTube video that highlights her name.
“I don’t like to listen to myself,” she said. “I am my own worst critic.”
